PAPAYA FRUIT : A RICH SOURCE OF ANTIOXIDANTS AND ESSENTIAL VITAMINS

INTRODUCTION :


Papaya is a tropical fruit that is believed to have originated in southern Mexico and Central America. It is now grown in many other parts of the world including India, Brazil, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Mexico. The fruit is rich in vitamins A and C and contains an enzyme called papain that helps break down proteins. (1)


Papaya is an important crop for many countries. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), global production of papaya was estimated at 13.5 million tonnes in 2020. India is the largest producer of papaya in the world followed by Brazil and Nigeria. (2)

 

BENEFITS OF PAPAYA FRUIT :


Papaya is a fruit that is rich in fiber, antioxidants and Vitamin C. It helps in the prevention of increased cholesterol in your arteries. Too much cholesterol leads to several coronary diseases, including heart attack, stroke, and hypertension. (3)


Papaya contains vitamin C, potassium, antioxidants, and fiber, which helps keep your arteries healthy and promotes blood flow. This can also lower cholesterol and reduce your risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke. (4)

Papaya may also function as a natural painkiller because of the enzyme papain. This enzyme increases the body’s production of cytokines, which are a group of proteins that help regulate inflammation. The fruit may reduce pain caused by arthritis and similar conditions. (9)


Papaya leaf teas and extracts are often used as an alternative therapy to alleviate uncomfortable digestive symptoms, such as gas, bloating, and heartburn. Papaya leaf contains fiber — a nutrient that supports healthy digestive function — and a unique compound called papain. (10)

 

HOW DOES THE PAPAYA GROWING:


Papayas need regular water during the growing season, but their roots can not sit in water. Be sure the soil is well-drained.Papayas are susceptible to root rot. Evenly moist soil is essential for best papaya fruit production; if the soil goes dry leaves, flowers, and fruit may drop. Keep the soil on the dry side in winter. (11)


To meet the nutrient requirements for fruit production, papaya necessitates regular fertilizer applications. Fertilizer is typically applied 2-4 times per year in commercial plantations. In the home garden, 1/4 cup of a balanced fertilizer applied every 14 days is usually sufficient. (12)


Water productivities equivalent to 1.8 to 2.8 kg (fresh fruit) m−3(irrigation water) have been obtained. Although papaya is generally considered to be drought sensitive and responsive to irrigation, there is a shortage of good experimental evidence to support this view. (13)
